INSIDE THE ART MARKET
The world behind the work.
How does a painting travel from an artist’s studio to a collector’s home? Galleries, fairs, auctions and private sales each play a part. Knowing how they work helps you ask better questions and enjoy looking for art.
INSIDE THE MARKET
Follow
the work.
A work can change hands in several ways.
PRIMARY MARKET
Artist or studio → gallery or direct first sale → collector
SECONDARY MARKET
Current owner → auction or private sale → new owner
Whichever route you take, look at the individual work, ask about its history and condition, and understand the purchase terms.
01 / DISCOVERY
Galleries & fairs
A gallery exhibition lets you spend time with an artist’s work. Ask how a piece relates to the wider practice, what is available and what you can learn from seeing it in person.
Art fairs bring many galleries together. They can be a useful starting point for discovering artists and comparing works, but there is no need to make a quick decision. Follow up with a viewing and research into the piece that interests you.
02 / PUBLIC SALES
Buying at auction
Auctions bring works to a public sale, with a catalogue, viewing period and published results. They offer a way to explore an artist’s market and compare individual works.
Before bidding, read the catalogue and condition report, view the work where possible and understand the sale terms. Decide your limit in advance, including the practical arrangements for bringing the work home.
Past results are useful context. Differences in period, medium, quality and condition mean that two works by the same artist may attract very different prices.
PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS
Beyond
public view.
Some works change hands through a conversation rather than a public sale. Buyer and seller can discuss timing and terms directly, with an adviser helping to bring the details together.
WHAT TO ASK
A private sale still needs careful research. Ask who owns the work, who is authorised to sell it and what is known about its history and condition. Agree what documents will accompany the purchase.
UNDERSTANDING THE PRICE
Two works by the same artist can differ greatly. Period, medium, size, condition and the significance of the individual piece all help explain an asking price. Comparisons are useful when they account for those differences.
